On time with my Musician Christmas Elves

Hello! Last year I started to paint my Musician Christmas Elves in November. This year I am on time, started  a couple weeks ago with these two more elves: flutist and accordionist. I  just should put colors on them. I have however - as usual - quite many oher unfinished paintings or drawings. Some flowers have been waiting since last summer ... I have even made a plan what I intend to do during this year. Doesn´t that sound ornanized for an bohemian artist! It is just easier - if you think and put it on the paper - to find out what is realistic.

At the Blueberry Time: About the background of the painting Art Nouveau Cat

It´s  the time of blueberries, so good to tell a little about the backgound of my picture "Art Nouveau Cat". I have already shared it in Google+ quite many times. The cat there is called Mathilda (sister of Mindo). It is quite a typical painting of mine at the time: I like for the first to combine realism - sometimes even photorealism - with fantasy and for the second make some objects with finel details and others approximate. In this painting the cat is painted in a very realistic way. In fact Mathilda looks quite exactly like that. The blueberries are simplified/stylished and make a good contrast with the yellowish background. The leaves of the lilies of the valley are quite redused, not much more than outlines  and two colors. It wasn´t my meaning to leave them so plain, but I think nothing more is needed in this painting. And the beautiful red - but poisoneus ! - berries have here an important  visual role. For the third: typical for me is that what the painting becomes in the end might often be quite much different from the one I sketched and planned. New ideas come when you paint. By the way often the best way to get ideas is to just start drawing something and the ideas just come;  rather than sit and try to seek the right mental creative artistic state of mind. For the fourth I have added here ornaments on the bottom. I like ornaments and decorations. I have left on purpose the lines not-straight. just because I have always preferred free línes. I never use ruler. But I admit that when I scetched the layout of the enlargement of my cottage for the architect, it looked better drawn with the help of the ruler...

But blueberries. They taste excellent as berries or in the form of blueberry-pie! And it is plenty of them arround my cottage. I should pick 1 litre per day. Already have 4 litres.

Wood Folk "Dragonfly Man" and recent news

It´s been long time since I wrote here. Well the spring went partly in "studying" entrepreneurship. I have launched  a Company of my own, named Siklee.  Comes from the french word giclée pronounced in finnish.

And I had not less than 4 exhibitions in June. One of them in the library of Sello is still continuing till 8.7.1016.

Been also planning to convert my cottage to my home  within a year, or at  least  make my cottage more comfortable to live also in wintertime. Some enlargement and comforts are needed. I´m waiting for the architectural drawings.  We´ll see see how it will go.
I have  also continued my series of "Wood Folk". I put here "The Dragonfly man". "Flower Girl" is the next but needs some finishing. The point in these drawings is to cover the surfaces with structure - without so many outlines - in stead of coloring. Have to confess that got the idea from an ink-drawing course. As an example of this style was mentioned Tove Jansson´s ink drawings.

So far 4 dancers in my series of "Dancers". There are still missing at least oriental dancer, river dancer, country western dancer, also males...with time. Maybe also Finnish Folk Dancers, or a whole series of them, favourite dresses...

Tähän mennessä 4 tanssijaa "Tanssijat" - sarjassa. Seuraavaksi tulee napatanssija, ja ...sitten varmaan vuorossa River Dance, Country & Western, myös miestanssijoita.... ajan kanssa. Ehkäpä myös kansallispukuinen suomalaistanssija tai sitten kokonainen kansallispukusarja...suosikkipuvut?

Wood Folk, Troll and Night Fairy

I started to make a series of "Wood folk", with Indian Ink.  Here to begin with the Troll and Night fairy. The first one, the troll is in fact drawn already in 2014. In the end of a 3-days Indian ink drawing course held By Janne Toriseva.  At that stage drawing with a nib-pencil was fluent. However there was a little funny problem with this troll, but I will tell it you later, I´ll make a competition of it.  That course was one of the best art-courses I´ve ever been to. We were supposed to draw a creature according to a written description of the creature, without model. After bumping into my troll-drawing I decided to continue the series in the same manner and got the idea to draw a series of "Wood Folk".  For me it is easiest draw people without model - excluded portraits of course. With them you need a model. The most difficult thing for me with people is hands and fingers. There a model helps. When talkin about models. You always have it somewhere. If not anywhere else, then in your head. For example when you have drawn a lot a certain topic, so that you remember the details ( as I have drawn people, or a cartoonist who draws the same character over and over again or cat or horses or cars...) or if you have extremely good visual memory. You can also learn tactics to memorize better, as trying to detect familiar forms from the model.
For this series I have  in addition to these, 4 almost ready pictures, and 3 sketces. We`ll see if  I will draw them all.  Maybe I also make  bigger and coloured versions of these A4 sized pictures. Should also make some more pictures to my dancers series, and some more landscapes. No lac of topics.

Aloin vaihteeksi piirtää enemmän tussilla. Tässä alkajaisiksi peikko ja "Yön keiju". Peikko on itse asiassa piirretty jo v 2014, 3-päiväisen tussikurssin viimeisenä päivänä, jolloin tussikynä (tussiterä) jo liukui sujuvasti. Vaikkakin tämän peikon kanssa tuli eteen yksi huvittava ongelma, josta laittanen myöhemmin pystyyn pienen kilpailun. Kyseinen kurssi on yksi parhaita taidekursseja, joita olen käynyt. Meidän oli määrä piirtää ilman mallia taruolento, josta oli kirjallinen kuvaus. Törmättyäni vastikään piirtämääni peikko-kuvaan aloin piirtää samaan tyyliin ja päätin piirtää kokonaisen "Metsän väki" sarjan. Minulle on luontevinta piirtää nimenomaan ihmisiä ilman mallia - lukuunottamatta muotokuvat, joissa tietysti tarvitsee mallin. Kuitenkin sormien piirtämisessä pähkäilen aina, ja mallista on apua. Malleista puheen ollen, olen sitä mieltä, että aina kun piirtää esittävää, on jossain joku malli. Jos ei sitten muualla, niin aivoissasi. Esimerkiksi jos olet piirtänyt jotain aihetta niin että yksityiskohdatkin ovat syöpyneet mieleesi tai piirtänyt kerta toisensa jälkeen samaa sarjakuvahahmoa tai kissoja tai hevosia tai autoja...) tai jos sinulla vain on ilmiömäisen hyvä visuaalinen muisti - tai hyvät muistitaktiikat.Voi esim. yrittää etsiä mallista tuttuja arkisia muotoja.
Tähän sarjaan olen piirtänyt nämä 2 valmista kuvaa, 4 puolivalmista ja muutaman luonnoksen. Katsotaan nyt mitä teen loppuun saakka. Olisi myös hauska tehdä näistä A4 kokoisista kuvista värilliset isommat versiot. Tanssija sarjaan voisi tehdä muutaman kuvan lisään, ja muutaman maisemankin. Aiheet eivät lopu.
Pitäisi myös laittaa tänne myös vanhempien töiden taustatarinoita.

Here you have the stylished version of the rapids, watercolor pencil + indian ink. This time not in Lapland, but combined with flowers. The same flowers that you can see in a photo in my website "about the artist", mock orange, quite much stylished however. The flowers are here in groups that form tubes. In fact inte bush that I have the flowers grow that way...if you look more closely. But as well these bushes could be white lilacs...When talking about the rapids, it is easier the make the rapids without model if you imagine that you are drawing irregular stairs with water above. I would like to make a woodcut of this also.
The paper here is smooth and relatively thin (140g/m2), so better use watercolor pencils with just a little water( or just color pencils), and not conventional water colors, to avoid wrinkles. Smoothness is good with ink however.
With time you learn quite much about papers and paintbrushes. It makes quite a lot of difference which you choose. With bad choise = not suitable paper, and especially low quality brush, it is difficult to make anything good, even though you had talent.
By the way. I have decided to try to have all the time some artwork somewhere here nearby in exhibitions, Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, maybe even a little further. From tomorrow on there are some flower-artworks in the library of "Iso Omena" = "Big Apple", Helsinki, in addition to the few that have already been a couple of weeks in Vihti. In many places there are quite long queues however, even one year.

Tässä jo aiemmin puheena ollut tyylitelty versio koskesta, tehty tussilla ja vesivärikynillä. Ei tällä kertaa lapsin maisemissa, vaan yhdistettynä mökkipihalta tuttuun jasmikkeeseen, jonka kukat olen pelkistänyt putkimaisiksi kimpuiksi, mitä ne itse asiassa ovat luonnossa, mutta eivät ihan näin vahvasti. Nämä kukat voisivat periaatteessa olla yhtä hyvin syreeneitä...Koski on helpompi piirtää ilman mallia kun kuvittelee sen epäsäännölliseksi portaikoksi, jonka päällä vesi virtaa.
Työ on tehty ohuehkolle (140 g /m2) sileälle paperille. Sileä paperi on hyvä tussityössä, mutta näin ohut ei niinkään hyvä tavalliselle vesivärille. Parempi värittää joko tavallisilla värikynillä tai vesivärikynillä käyttämällä vain vähän vettä. Muuten menee aika lailla ryppyyn. Haluaisin tehdä tästä mallista myös puupiirroksen.
Ajan myötä on myös oppinut että paperin ja erityisesti siveltimen valinnalla on väliä. Jos sattuu valitsemaan vääränlaisen paperin ja varsinkin jo valitsee surkean siveltimen, on taitavankaan tekijän vaikea saada aikaiseksi hyvää työtä.
Olen aloitellut "näyttelyputkea" eli käytännössä toivon, että minulla olisi koko jana joitain töitä jossain näyttelyssä täällä lähikunnissa. No muutama työ onkin Vihdin Taideyhdistyksen näyttelyssä Vihdissä ja huomenna vien kukkatöitä. "Iso Omenan"-kirjastoon Espooseen. Kirjastojen näyttelyt ovat kyllä suosittuja, vuoden jono ei ole harvinaista, mutta jotain tilaa tuntuu silti löytyvän.

Lapland Kilpisjärvi, watercolor painting / Lappi, Kilpisjärvi, akvarelli

 

Lapland, Kilpisjärvi. A very nice place. Have been there years ago.  I think that the mountains are at the same time powerful and calming, weather they are in Lapland, southern Finland, Tenerife or where ever. .

A more traditional and realistic painting for change. However not totally realistic. I have exaggerated the tortuobsity of the trees,  mountain birches, for instance.  The mountain ,Saana, I tried to paint as it looks.

 

Simultaneously I made a stylized painting, with the same original idea, the brook, which however I also have exaggerated so that it looks rapids. I will put the stylized one here  a little later. It feels nice to paint landscapes after a long time.

Lappi, Kilpisjärvi. Hieno paikka, jossa olen ollut vuosia sitten. Vuoristomaisemissa on jotain samalla sekä mahtiponista että rauhoittavaa, oli se sitten Lapissa tai vaikka Teneriffan vuoristossa. Tällä kertaa, vaihteeksi perinteisempi ja realistisempi maalaus. Olen kuitenkin halunnut korostaa tunturikoivujen kiemuraisuutta. Purostakin tuli enemmän kosken näköinen. Saana-tunturista yritin tehdä ihan itsensä näköisen.

 

Tein samanaikaisesti myös tyylitellymmän maalauksen, jossa myöskin oli innoittajana koski. Laitan sen tänne vähän myöhemmin.

Mukavaa tehdä maisemia pitkästä aikaa.
